Day Thirty Three | The Great Fast, 2026

Spiritual progress happens gradually. Remember St. Francis de Sales's admonition to have patience with all things, but first of all with yourself. Christ chose the time in which to be captured, so as to enter into his passion at the fullness of time. He has a particular hour for you with all things, too.

Hypocrisy is a difficult vice to detect in ourselves since it is so bound up with pride and ultimately produces spiritual blind spots. In order to combat this vice of hypocrisy, we have to be completely transparent with God and ourselves.

Day Thirty One | The Great Fast, 2026

Today, we have a small reprieve from the rigors of our Lenten observance. We rejoice with our Lord and our Lady. But as we continue on into Passiontide, we should always be mindful that the cross was inevitable. From the very beginning, the crucifixion was already inscribed into the incarnation.

Day Thirty | The Great Fast, 2026

Christ's cross and his wounded humanity are the cause for our salvation and our healing, for by his wounds we were and are healed. The question is, do we really and truly believe that? Do we see our sins mapped out on to the savior's crucified body?

Day Twenty Nine | The Great Fast, 2026

We find ourselves now in what is called by the church, Passiontide. Today, in particular, the Church reminds us that nothing is hidden from God, who sees everything and delights in those who honor him in their hearts.

Day Twenty Eight | The Great Fast, 2026

If you feel yourself tempted to let go of your cross, think of that soul on the other side of the world who is right now in desperate need of your prayers, your fasting, your penances. And think of what joy you will both have someday when that person meets you in heaven and can thank you in person for helping them.

Day Twenty Seven | The Great Fast, 2026

Fear can wreak havoc on our spiritual life. We're afraid to fast a little more fervently, or we worry about the state of the world or the Church. Fear not. God is in charge and Easter will soon be here.

Day Twenty Six | The Great Fast, 2026

Today, we pray for holy simplicity. Let us imitate the simplicity of Saint Joseph. Let us love and serve Jesus and Mary.

Day Twenty Five | The Great Fast, 2026

In the midst of this life on Earth, we are already approaching death. But for us who believe in Christ and follow him, death will be an entrance into eternal life of perfect happiness, where we will be united to the most blessed Trinity forever.

Day Twenty Four | The Great Fast, 2026

We can fast and pray and do penance, and we certainly should. But if we do not lend a hand to those in need, what good is it all? So during the second half of Lent, we might consider taking a moment to reflect and see how we are doing in this regard.

Day Twenty Three | The Great Fast, 2026

We are now just past the midpoint of Lent. As you continue down the Lenten road, first make an act of faith. Then ask for an increase in faith. And finally, ask Jesus to heal you of your spiritual lethargy and discouragement.

Day Twenty Two | The Great Fast, 2026

There are good and bad reasons to fast. So, we must be mindful of our prayer, our fasting and almsgiving, and carry these important works out for the salvation of souls and the glory of God.

Day Twenty One | The Great Fast, 2026

Sanctifying grace, which we receive ordinarily at baptism, enables us to be friends with God and to be adopted sons and daughters of God. As we approach the halfway point of this holy Lenten season, remember that all our fasting is out of love of God, our Father and friend.
