Live: Tenebrae, 2025

The Norbertines of St. Michael's Abbey invite you to join us (in-person or via livestream) for Tenebrae. ‍

As we enter the Triduum, and as our Lenten observances reach the height of their focus and intensity, the Norbertines of St. Michael's Abbey want to extend an invitation to join us (in-person or via livestream) for Tenebrae.

The liturgy of Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness"), which dates back to the ninth century, is a special expression of Matins and Lauds unique to Holy Week. The psalms chanted during Tenebrae ground Our Lord's Passion in the context of Salvation History. The candles on the hearse, extinguished one by one during the liturgy, serve as a powerful and plain metaphor to illustrate the unfathomable severity and sadness of Our Lord's Passion. Tenebrae and the livestream will begin at 6:15 AM Pacific on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

This liturgy will begin at 6:15 AM (Pacific). This broadcast will begin approximately 10 minutes in advance.
