Abbeys have a long history of brewing beer. This past Michaelmas, St. Michael's Abbey continued this happy tradition.
To celebrate the special collections of our library and to foster the continued scholarship that is so much a part of our monastic life, we are inaugurating an academic lecture series: the Chadwick-Oden Lecture Series.
On Christmas Eve, the Norbertine Fathers of St. Michael's Abbey welcomed eleven new men into the community as novices -- the largest class in the history of our community! On the day marking the traditional birthday of the Norbertine Order, the St. Michael's community continues to be blessed abundantly by young men willing to lay down their lives for God and His Holy Church.
Originally a medieval carol performed during the Mystery Plays of Coventry, this English carol depicting the account of the massacre of the Holy Innocents from the Gospel of Matthew has since become a Christmas classic. The hauntingly somber melody and heart-breaking lyrics evoke a spirit of mourning amidst the otherwise jubilant spirit of the Christmas octave. The song recalls the women of Bethlehem bidding farewell to their children who are about to be slaughtered by decree of King Herod.
