Introduction: The Great Fast, 2025

In recent years, the focus of Lent has drifted from the ancient and worthy task of daily fasting. This Lent offers us an opportunity to reclaim this tradition.

Though it has been lost in recent years, the simple Lenten observance of daily fasting remains one of the richest and spiritually powerful traditions of the Church. In this program, we seek to help you reclaim an authentic and communal observance of Lent—a tradition that has guided the Church for centuries, and one that still informs the spiritual life of our abbey.

This is a challenge, but it is so rewarding. Persevere, and you will find that fasting draws you closer to Christ. And know, all the while, that you will be in our prayers, even as we ask you to keep us in yours.

In addition to undertaking the practice of daily fasting, you can expect short video reflections and audio recordings to guide you in this vital spiritual work. Each morning, you will receive a series of prayers and reflections to guide your fast:

  • A recitation of a morning offering, specially composed by one of our confreres here at the abbey
  • A meditation on one of the Penitential Psalms
  • A recitation of the Angelus
  • A short spiritual reflection (and encouragement!) drawn from the Divine Office

You will also receive a "Table Reading" to help guide your heart and mind even during your main meal of the day.

We are honored to include you in this part of our abbey life. Let us journey together toward Calvary and, in time, to the glory of Easter.
